Endodontic (Root Canal) Therapy

root canal 1Endodontic therapy is indicated in any circumstances where the pulpal (nerve) tissue of the tooth is irreversibly inflamed or necrotic (dead). Usually, but not always, patients will experience some degree of pain in a tooth which is in need of endodontic therapy. A large cavity, significant crack, fracture, or trauma to a tooth can cause irreversible inflammation or nerve necrosis.

Depending on the situation, your dentist may refer you to an endodontist, or root canal specialist, to complete your treatment. With root canal success rates approaching 98% success, it is critical that all inflamed or necrotic tissue be thoroughly removed, and sealed. In many cases, your endodontic procedure can be completed by one of our dentists. If a referral is needed, we work closely with many excellent clinicians in the area, and will work diligently to schedule you with them promptly.

Be aware that following endodontic therapy, most teeth are significantly weakened, and more susceptible to fracture. In most cases, a full crown is needed following root canal work. If a referral is made to an endodontist, they will complete the root canal, and your general dentist will complete the crown work.
