Gum Disease & Medical Wellness

A great deal of information is emerging on this topic. Periodontal disease is an inflammatory process that supports a virulent ecosystem of bacteria in a patient's mouth. There is evidence that both the chronic inflammatory process and the bacteria may be at work in other body organ locations. The inflammatory process involved in atherosclerosis, heart disease, has been forming stronger links to the inflammation and bacteria in periodontal disease. Periodontal bacteria have been found in certain pneumonias recently. In older patients, whose immune system has been compromised, there is increasing concern that bacteria from gum disease puts them at risk. There is emerging research that poor hygiene during pregnancy can adversely affect the health of newborns. As the relationship between the mouth and the rest of the body becomes clearer, it is changing the way dentists and physicians view oral health.

There are several systemic conditions that will affect the health or condition of any given persons periodontal health. Changing hormone levels during pregnancy or even oral contraceptives may create an increased inflammation and swelling of the gums. Diabetes will create chronic inflammation and poor resistance to the bacteria that cause gum disease. Many medications will have an impact on gum inflammation or bacterial resistance, including antihistamines, antidepressants, steroids, and cancer drugs. A number of drugs cause dry mouth; some heart and high blood pressure pills, incontinence medications, some cancer drugs and radiation therapy are all guilty. A dry mouth always results in dental health breakdowns; saliva is an important delivery system for your immune system.

Periodontal health is serious business. Periodontal disease is treatable and manageable; we take it seriously and will encourage you to do the same.
